And then there are others (maybe you consider yourself to be in this category) who seem to gain weight just by looking at a bag of chips or piece of cake.

Sure, that's an exaggeration, but what gives!? Let's be honest - it can be maddening, frustrating, and downright depressing.

Of course, what's really happening here is that you're comparing your body to the bodies of others. This is the #1 reason for feeling dissatisfied with your body. You have a story about how your body shouldn't be - because you've got a story about how it should be.

So How is the Comparing Working For You?

When you're unhappy with the state of your body, sometimes it can seem like comparing your body to another body is a good idea.

Maybe you see a picture of someone in a magazine and you think, "She's really attractive." Then when you think about your own body it sounds like this: "My body isn't as nice as hers" and that thought makes you feel bad.

So then as a reaction to believing that thought and feeling that way, you decide that you're going to start a diet or an exercise program.

Seems to make sense, right?

But what's happening here is that you're not moving toward those diets and exercise programs with clarity. You're moving toward them as a reaction. You're moving toward them out of fear because you haven't made friends with your body as it is.

When you're in reaction, it's easy to neglect your Thoughts and Feelings. You may feel unhappy about something and jump straight into the Actions with what you can do about the situation. When you don't pay attention to your thoughts (which ultimately lead to your feelings) sustaining any action like a diet or fitness program will be that much harder.

The Story of You

Even though your body doesn't look exactly like another person's body - people tend to have very similar stories about their bodies. Which of these sound like you?

  • A life-long struggle. Ever since you can remember you have been self-conscious of your weight and have struggled with self-esteem and diet programs. You often feel like there's something wrong with you because you're "supposed to be" thinner and able to lose weight. Your body feels more like an unwelcome stranger than a friend.
  • Life after 30. You didn't used to have an issue with weight, but now that you're getting older the body is responding differently than it used to. Your belly is getting bigger, you don't have the energy that you used to, your thighs are getting wider, your boobs are...well, you get the picture. You're trying to adjust to your new body and you're concerned that it's just going to get worse from here.
  • A few extra pounds. You tend to feel pretty good about your body, but every now and then you grab a little chunk of fat and shake it thinking, "It'd be great to get rid of this." You want to lose weight, but you also want to be kind to yourself without going on a crackers and water diet.
  • I want peace. Being 400 pounds or 100 pounds would be fine with you - so long as you could be at peace with it. You really want to make friends with your body as it shows up now and then you'll be open to whatever happens from there. The bottom line is that you want to stop arguing with the reality of your body.

Whether your dissatisfaction with the size of your body is this big:[---------------------] or this big: [-], if you're not 100% happy with your body as it is right now, the only thing between you and that peace is a series of stressful and limiting beliefs that you can question.

It Comes Down to 2

If you strip away all the ideas about weight loss, body image, and what's "appropriate" for someone your height, when it comes down to it, we've noticed that there are 2 ways to do anything:

  1. With Peace
  2. With Stress

So think of your body as it is now - right in this moment as you're sitting there reading this. There are two ways to be in that body that you have - with peace or with stress.

And when it comes to losing weight, there are two ways to do that - one with peace, and the other with stress.

In fact, there are two ways to gain weight - with peace or with stress.

(You're probably catching the drift of this, right?) :-)

Whether you experience peace or stress during those situations depends entirely on the stories that you're telling yourself. It's never actually a body issue that we're dealing with when it comes to body image - it's a thinking issue. And once your thinking gets cleared up, the feelings, actions, and results that ripple out from there can come from clarity instead of confusion.

Who Would You Be?

Who would you be without the story that your body should be thinner? Many people fear that if they didn't have that story that they would just sit around and eat chips all day and wouldn't be motivated to take care of their bodies or exercise. (Sound like a familiar fear?)

But can you really know that that's true?

Could it be possible that you could take care of your body and be moved to eat healthy foods and exercise without all that pressure and fear that comes with the thought of: "My body should be thinner?"
